SKY FARM MULLUMBIMBY

The varying properties of hemp combine to help Sky Farm feel fresh and healthy throughout the seasons.

The house overlooks stunning escarpment which surrounds Mullumbimby and the Byron hinterland.

Sky Farm is the home of Balanced Earth co-founder Michael Leung, his wife Tiffany and their two boys.

The property began with the small Hempcrete Villa where they all lived for several years before designing and building the main house with help from Balanced Earth Architect’s Leo Dewitte and the rest of the Balanced Earth family.

Advantage has been taken from the homes northern aspect, where full height bifold doors form a wall of glass to absorb warmth from the winter sun. Large eaves shelter the home from the high sun through summer. The internal walls have almost all been rendered with breathable Spanish plaster. Only the eastern face of the master bedroom remains as raw hempcrete, helping to tell a story of the home’s natural ingredients.

Adjoining the master bedroom is a simple, open ensuite containing a solid concrete bath and recycled Oregon Pine bench top and shelves.

Sustainability:

  • 122,000l harvested rainwater

  • Hempcrete walls throughout

  • Reclaimed timber as exposed trusses

  • Passive solar design with fully glazed northern aspect allowing warmth from the winter sun to be captured in the slab floor. Large eaves protect the the home from the intensity of the high summer heat.

  • Breathable lime and clay renders used on internal and external walls.
